Get Clarity on Cloud, Migration, and What Comes Next

Your most pressing infrastructure questions—answered by the experts who’ve done this before.

  1. When should you start planning a data center migration?

Ideally, 6-12 months in advance—especially if you’re facing a contract renewal or lease expiration. Early planning gives you time to evaluate providers, design a compliant roadmap, and avoid costly, last-minute decisions.

  2. What makes The Cavan Group different from other migration consultants?

We’re 100% vendor agnostic. We don’t sell platforms or collect referral fees. Our sole motivation is to craft the optimal cloud migration strategy for your business—free from bias, upsells, or hidden agendas.

  3. What’s included in a typical migration engagement?

We offer a comprehensive scope, including workload assessment, cloud strategy development, data migration roadmap creation, vendor selection, and end-to-end migration management. We also handle network consolidation, colocation planning, and compliance readiness.

  4. Is cloud always cheaper?

Not always—and that’s the myth. Real cloud cost savings depend on how well your architecture, workloads, and operations are designed. At Cavan Group, we help you navigate cloud cost complexity to uncover what truly delivers ROI in your environment.

  5. Can The Cavan Group support highly regulated industries?

Absolutely. We specialize in healthcare, finance, and other regulated sectors. Our Solutions align with HIPAA, SOX, PCI, and GDPR requirements and include built-in audit support and documentation.

  6. What’s the difference between hybrid cloud and multi-cloud?

Hybrid cloud blends private and public infrastructure, while multi-cloud involves using multiple public cloud service providers (CSPs). They’re not either/or—many organizations benefit from a tailored mix, and Cavan Group helps optimize both models to suit your strategy.

  7. How long does a migration typically take?

Migration timelines vary depending on infrastructure complexity, contract lead times (especially telecom), and internal readiness. We help you create realistic schedules based on current state and market realities—not vendor promises.

  8. What are the risks of waiting too long to start a migration project?

Waiting too long can lead to vendor lock-in, lease penalties, limited data centre availability, and last-minute migration risks. The earlier Cavan Group is involved, the more options you have to reduce cost, avoid disruption, and plan strategically.

  9. What should we watch out for in co-location contracts?

Unexpected fees or high fees for items like cross-connects, per-whip power charges, and “premium” support are common. We review contracts line by line to protect your budget and ensure service terms match your operational needs.

  10. What happens if our internal team has limited bandwidth?

No problem. Our light-touch model is designed to augment your team, not overwhelm them. We handle the complexity while keeping your internal resources focused on day-to-day operation.

  11. Do you use automation in your migration strategy?

Yes. We help clients integrate automation for DR testing, cost-optimized workload placement, compliance reporting, and more—boosting efficiency while reducing manual overhead and risk.

  12. How do you ensure minimal disruption during migration?

We start with in-depth discovery and dependency mapping to identify risks before they impact your business. Our migration approach is aligned to your operational schedule—so your team can leave Friday and return Monday without any unwelcome surprises.

  13. How do I know your team can handle a move like ours?

We’ve led successful migrations for Fortune 500 firms with global footprints, legacy systems, and tight compliance requirements. If it’s complex, high-stakes, and sensitive—we’ve done it before.

  14. How long does data center migration take?

There are many factors that will impact the duration of a data center migration project including the client’s preparedness and risk tolerance, the number of systems in scope for the migration, the readiness of the new data center provider to provision the needed space, and the availability of the client’s network providers within the target location. As part of a Data Center Strategy engagement, the Cavan Group will evaluate these factors in detail and provide an estimated timeline to accomplish the migration.

  15. What makes you different from other migration strategists?

Unlike most migration providers, The Cavan Group is fully independent. We have no partnerships or financial ties with any cloud platforms, managed services, or colocation vendors. Our impartiality means we act solely in your best interests, providing unbiased advice and strategic clarity every step of the way.

  16. Who have you worked with/helped?

At Cavan, we have been fortunate to work with many successful companies on important and rewarding projects. Some of these companies include Staples, Liberty Mutual, Expedia, Constant Contact, and more.

  17. What is a Multi Cloud?

A multi-cloud strategy uses multiple cloud platforms—such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud—to manage workloads across different providers. This approach gives organizations greater flexibility, helps avoid vendor lock-in, and enables them to leverage the unique strengths of each Cloud Service Provider (CSP) to meet specific business needs. 18. What is a Hybrid cloud?

A hybrid cloud combines private and public cloud platforms into a single, flexible infrastructure. A private cloud—either on-premises or third-party hosted—is dedicated to one organization, offering greater control and security. Public cloud environments, in contrast, are shared and highly scalable.

Hybrid and multi-cloud strategies aren’t mutually exclusive. At Cavan Group, we often help clients optimize both—integrating multiple public Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) alongside private infrastructure to meet specific business, compliance, and performance goals. Learn more about the difference between Hybrid Cloud and Multi-Cloud and Hybrid Cloud Strategy.

  19. Should you migrate to the cloud?

Cloud migration offers many benefits—but cost savings alone shouldn’t drive the decision. It’s critical to understand how cloud changes your cost structure (from CapEx to OpEx), your operating model (what you manage vs. what your cloud provider manages), and your technology stack (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).

At Cavan Group, we guide organisations through these decisions using a proven cloud strategy framework—ensuring your migration aligns with long-term business and technology goals.

  20. When should youI begin looking for migration services?

It’s never too early to start looking into migration services. In our experience, it can take as much as half a year to get the right network connectivity provisioned at the target data center and that work can only begin once a contract with the data center provider is in place! If a client has not yet determined the target provider, a thorough partner selection process can take 3-6 months to find the provider that will meet all of the requirements. Because data center migrations do not take place frequently, bringing in experts like the Cavan Group can help companies ensure quality results and efficient use of time.

  21. Can The Cavan Group Handle Regulated Industries and Data Privacy?

Yes—and we do it every day. Cavan Group has deep experience supporting clients in highly regulated sectors like Financial Services and Healthcare. When migrating sensitive data, we implement strict controls, audit trails, and compliance frameworks to meet industry regulations and satisfy both internal and external audits. Your data stays secure, compliant, and under control.
